The Sphynx breed originated in the 1960s in Canada when a hairless cat named Prune gave birth to a hairless kitten named Epidermis. Breeders began selectively breeding these hairless cats to create the this breed. Despite their name, Sphynx cats are not related to the ancient Egyptian Sphinx, but their sleek, exotic appearance inspired the association.

Maintenance

Despite being hairless, this cats require regular grooming to maintain their skin health. They should be bathe periodically to remove excess oil and debris from their skin, as well as to prevent skin infections. Additionally, they may require regular ear cleaning and nail trimming.

Health

Sphynx cats are generally healthy, but they may be predispose to certain health issues, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition, and respiratory infections due to their lack of fur. They are also susceptible to sunburn and temperature extremes due to their lack of protective fur, so they should be kept indoors or provide with sunscreen and appropriate clothing when outdoors.
